Jean Craighead George was born in Washington D.C. Her whole family were naturalists. Most of her life she has spent in writing and nature. When she was in third grade she first became attracted with nature when her father, an entomologist, showed her something that looked like a twig. She was so delighted that she wrote a poem named “to a walking stick” and after that she has been writing ever since.

In the 1940s she was a member of the White house press corps and a reporter in The Washington Post.

She has written over sixty books. Some of them are “My Side of the Mountain”, which won the Newbery Honor Book award, and “Far side of the mountain”.

In 1991, Jean George won the School Library Award Media section of the New York Library Association’s Knickerbocker Award for Juvenile Literature.

Jean Craighead George has three children, and has grandchildren. She has also kept one hundred and seventy-three pets!
